arts & Entertainment

The current economic climate is tough on everyone - people are losing their homes, losing their jobs and struggling to survive.

What we all need at a time like this is entertainment. Light relief. Fun. But with cinema trips, DVDs and CDs being unnecessary expenses we can ill-afford, this falls by the wayside, and we end up sitting on the sofa, watching naff sitcom repeats while stuffing our faces with soon-to-expire junk food from the supermarket's reduced section.

It doesn't need to be this way - there are countless cheap ways to entertain yourself all over the internet - a small outlay at the start can reap huge rewards later on, there are even ideas for making a bit of money in the process.

With so much out there, it's hard to separate the wheat from the proverbial chaff, so lets check out a few of the top entertainment offerings to keep you occupied on these long winter nights.

1. Learn an instrument
Dust off that electric guitar you always intended to learn, or pick up a cheap keyboard on eBay. There are tons of inexpensive and excellent online courses that will turn you into a rock god - you can while away the hours practicing your riffs, or invite your mates round for a jam.

Get good enough, and you could join a band. If you're in desperate need of cash, there's a wealth of cover bands out there making serious cash - just leave your dignity at home, chuck on a Kiss costume, and you'll soon be rolling in the money.
